Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) has been set up by the Government to pay the services of lawyers to represent those needing legal representation in criminal proceedings from the moment a person is arrested. Road shows were held in Teluk Intan, Taiping and Ipoh to recruit more volunteers. The pioneer batch of 28 Perak Bar members, out of the 50 lawyers signed up to do YBGK work, attended a one day’s training at Hillcity Hotel on 16.04.2011. The second batch of 22 lawyers attended another training session last Saturday 17.03.12 at the Perak Bar Conference Room. The objective of the training was to equip lawyers with the necessary information and skills to assist and represent those in need of legal representation.
The training was jointly organized by Bar Council and Perak Bar Legal Aid Centre. The training was conducted by Mr. Ravin Singh, Hon. Secretary of Kuala Lumpur Bar and Ms Harleen Kaur, Chairperson of Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre.
In his welcome speech, Mr. Gokoolaram Naidu welcomed all the participants and gave an overview of YBGK. He later went on to introduce the trainers. This was followed by the opening address by Chairman for Perak Bar Mr. Edwin Seibel who thanked all lawyers who had signed up as YBGK lawyers and went on to explain the need of implementing the scheme in Perak since it was launched by the Prime Minister on 25.2.11. He also stressed on the need of getting more member’s cooperation in future too.
The training began with YBGK Administration and Procedures and followed with Training on Criminal Law (Arrest, Remad, Bail & Mitigation). Our members kept the trainers busy with questions being asked throughout the training session. The training was a success and the date of implementing the scheme simultaneously nationwide is tentatively scheduled for 02.04.12.
